(Mostly) Familiar Favorites: #iPodAlbumPlaylist, pt. IV

Entroducing... is a great album but not my favorite instrumental hip hop album. That would go to J Dilla's Donuts. But I haven't listened to Entroducing... in a while so I definitely need to revisit that.

Return to the 36 Chambers is a favorite of mine. ODB is such a compelling personality that even when his lyrics aren't exactly as deft as the other clansmen he is a standout in the group. RZA's production work is also immaculate. Raw Hide, Brooklyn Zoo, Shimmy Shimmy Ya, and Protect Ya Neck Pt. 2 (there's a guy on there named Shorty Shit Stain!) are standouts to me.

For a while I think I preferred The Private Press; not sure if it would be now. It's my understanding that on that record, DJ Shadow uses original recordings in addition to samples; is that the case? I like Blood on the Motorway a lot.

This was my first listen to Return to the 36 Chambers; in fact I still haven't listened to most Wu-Tang spin-offs. Future #iPodPlaylists, perhaps...

Couldn't tell ya. Endtrodcuing... is the only DJ Shadow I've heard and that was a while ago. The Private Press looks interesting and underrated so I'll be checking that out soon.

I think you'll love Liquid Swords, and all the others are great as well. But Liquid Swords is a good place to start.
