Lost in the Movies: February 2017

Malcolm Sloan (TWIN PEAKS Character Series Bonus #18)

The TWIN PEAKS Character Series surveys one hundred ten characters from the series Twin Peaks (1990-91 on ABC and 2017 on Showtime as The Return), the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992), and The Missing Pieces (2014), a collection of deleted scenes from that film. The series will be rebooted in 2023 to reflect the third season (and patrons will have immediate access to each entry a month before it goes public), but this entry will remain intact. There will be spoilers.

Malcolm dumps a lot of exposition in bizarre, rambling dialogue while hiding his sinister plans.

Sheriff Cable (TWIN PEAKS Character Series Bonus #17)

The TWIN PEAKS Character Series surveys one hundred ten characters from the series Twin Peaks (1990-91 on ABC and 2017 on Showtime as The Return), the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992), and The Missing Pieces (2014), a collection of deleted scenes from that film. The series will be rebooted in 2023 to reflect the third season (and patrons will have immediate access to each entry a month before it goes public), but this entry will remain intact. There will be spoilers.

Cable is surly and smug in defense of his provincial prerogative...until confronted with FBI fisticuffs.

NOT JUST O.J.: 7 Subjects in O.J.: Made in America (video essay)

My first video essay of 2017 is finally available and it took a while to put together. As part of "Oscars on Fandor Month" it celebrates Ezra Edelman's 8-hour documentary O.J.: Made in America, which is nominated for Best Documentary in tonight's ceremony.

In order to analyze this film, I "cheated" and took two different approaches. The two-and-half minute introduction compares Made in America to its coincidental 2016 companion, the dramatized miniseries The People v. O.J. Simpson. Then, I move on to the primary approach: delineating seven subjects the film deals with besides O.J. Simpson, although they all involve him of course.

Here is my introduction to the video:

Jonathan Kumagai (TWIN PEAKS Character Series Bonus #16)

The TWIN PEAKS Character Series surveys one hundred ten characters from the series Twin Peaks (1990-91 on ABC and 2017 on Showtime as The Return), the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992), and The Missing Pieces (2014), a collection of deleted scenes from that film. The series will be rebooted in 2023 to reflect the third season (and patrons will have immediate access to each entry a month before it goes public), but this entry will remain intact. There will be spoilers.

Jonathan spends several days observing the town as a mysterious stranger before revealing his very focused agenda.

Vivian Niles (TWIN PEAKS Character Series #62)

*A revised entry will be published separately in 2023 for an updated character series (which will be collected here). This is the original entry written before The Return.

The TWIN PEAKS Character Series surveys eighty-two characters from the series Twin Peaks (1990-91) and the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992) as well as The Missing Pieces (2014), a collection of deleted scenes from that film. A new character study will appear every weekday morning until the premiere of Showtime's new season of Twin Peaks on May 21, 2017. There will be spoilers for the original series and film.

Vivian is crisp, calm, and articulate – she will destroy your confidence with artfully phrased passive aggression rather than overt hostility.

Teresa Banks (TWIN PEAKS Character Series Bonus #15)

The TWIN PEAKS Character Series surveys one hundred ten characters from the series Twin Peaks (1990-91 on ABC and 2017 on Showtime as The Return), the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992), and The Missing Pieces (2014), a collection of deleted scenes from that film. The series will be rebooted in 2023 to reflect the third season (and patrons will have immediate access to each entry a month before it goes public), but this entry will remain intact. There will be spoilers.

Teresa, rootless, enigmatic, and hardened despite her youth, has cultivated her wits and uses them in a risky move that ends up backfiring.

Tim Pinkle (TWIN PEAKS Character Series Bonus #14)

The TWIN PEAKS Character Series surveys one hundred ten characters from the series Twin Peaks (1990-91 on ABC and 2017 on Showtime as The Return), the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992), and The Missing Pieces (2014), a collection of deleted scenes from that film. The series will be rebooted in 2023 to reflect the third season (and patrons will have immediate access to each entry a month before it goes public), but this entry will remain intact. There will be spoilers.

Pinkle is a disaster of all trades, master of none, equipped with the belief that if he talks fast and frequently enough, he can bluff his way through.

Thomas Eckhardt (TWIN PEAKS Character Series Bonus #13)

The TWIN PEAKS Character Series surveys one hundred ten characters from the series Twin Peaks (1990-91 on ABC and 2017 on Showtime as The Return), the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992), and The Missing Pieces (2014), a collection of deleted scenes from that film. The series will be rebooted in 2023 to reflect the third season (and patrons will have immediate access to each entry a month before it goes public), but this entry will remain intact. There will be spoilers.

Eckhardt’s sinister vibe and polished presentation do him little good when dealing with desire and betrayal.

Lost in the Movies Gets a Makeover: February 2017 Status Update (including Ben Dixon call-in: "divorce the Democrats"?)

Lost in the Movies gets a new address, background, and commenting format (with old comments finally restored) - plus updated directories/galleries, Twin Peaks news, the situation with Fandor, video shares, and political notes (including another call-in to Ben Dixon & my tweets on the subject of "divorcing the Democratic Party")

You've probably noticed that some things have changed around here. First there's the background - a change both subtle and easy to sense right away. The sides of the blog are now enveloped in dark red curtains (and a peek at a chevron floor depending on the size of your screen). A Twin Peaks focus is well under way, with new character studies every day as we count down the months (just over three), weeks (exactly thirteen) and days (ninety-two) until the new series premieres on Showtime. The character pieces have proved popular so far; you can navigate the series through this directory.

But there's a lot more going on too...

Invitation to Love (TWIN PEAKS Character Series Bonus #12)

The TWIN PEAKS Character Series surveys one hundred ten characters from the series Twin Peaks (1990-91 on ABC and 2017 on Showtime as The Return), the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992), and The Missing Pieces (2014), a collection of deleted scenes from that film. The series will be rebooted in 2023 to reflect the third season (and patrons will have immediate access to each entry a month before it goes public), but this entry will remain intact. There will be spoilers.

The TV sets of Twin Peaks are always tuned to Invitation to Love, a cheesy, over-the-top soap opera whose events often mirror what's going on in the town itself.

Chet Weems (played by the fictional actor Martin Padley) is a nebbishy little guy embroiled in a web of intrigue and desire.

He is married to the good-hearted, clean-cut Jade (Selina Swift) but tempted by her sultry, vampy, big-haired sister Emerald (also Selina Swift!).

Emerald and Jade are the daughters of the wealthy but embattled Jared Lancaster (Evan St. Vincent).

Emerald has teamed up with the very eighties-looking (headband and jean-jacket vest) scoundrel Montana (Jason Dimbo) to take advantage of the nobler Lancasters.

Jones (TWIN PEAKS Character Series Bonus #11)

The TWIN PEAKS Character Series surveys one hundred ten characters from the series Twin Peaks (1990-91 on ABC and 2017 on Showtime as The Return), the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992), and The Missing Pieces (2014), a collection of deleted scenes from that film. The series will be rebooted in 2023 to reflect the third season (and patrons will have immediate access to each entry a month before it goes public), but this entry will remain intact. There will be spoilers.

Jones’ presence is regal and unsettling; her diplomatic air cloaks a perverse sense of duty.

Johnny Horne (TWIN PEAKS Character Series #68)

*A revised entry will be published separately in 2023 for an updated character series (which will be collected here). This is the original entry written before The Return.

The TWIN PEAKS Character Series surveys eighty-two characters from the series Twin Peaks (1990-91) and the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992) as well as The Missing Pieces (2014), a collection of deleted scenes from that film. A new character study will appear every weekday morning until the premiere of Showtime's new season of Twin Peaks on May 21, 2017. There will be spoilers for the original series and film.

Johnny is immersed in his own inner world, further isolated when he loses his one significant human connection.

Einar Thorson (TWIN PEAKS Character Series Bonus #10)

The TWIN PEAKS Character Series surveys one hundred ten characters from the series Twin Peaks (1990-91 on ABC and 2017 on Showtime as The Return), the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992), and The Missing Pieces (2014), a collection of deleted scenes from that film. The series will be rebooted in 2023 to reflect the third season (and patrons will have immediate access to each entry a month before it goes public), but this entry will remain intact. There will be spoilers.

Einar is a garrulous visitor to Twin Peaks, seemingly as interested in having a good time as making business deals.

Carl Rodd (TWIN PEAKS Character Series #70)

*A revised entry will be published separately in 2023 for an updated character series (which will be collected here). This is the original entry written before The Return.

The TWIN PEAKS Character Series surveys eighty-two characters from the series Twin Peaks (1990-91) and the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992) as well as The Missing Pieces (2014), a collection of deleted scenes from that film. A new character study will appear every weekday morning until the premiere of Showtime's new season of Twin Peaks on May 21, 2017. There will be spoilers for the original series and film.

Grouchy but gregarious, Carl is much more attuned to his surroundings than he would like to be.

Dougie Milford (TWIN PEAKS Character Series Bonus #9)

The TWIN PEAKS Character Series surveys one hundred ten characters from the series Twin Peaks (1990-91 on ABC and 2017 on Showtime as The Return), the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992), and The Missing Pieces (2014), a collection of deleted scenes from that film. The series will be rebooted in 2023 to reflect the third season (and patrons will have immediate access to each entry a month before it goes public), but this entry will remain intact. There will be spoilers.

Dougie is in love, and he will fight to defend the integrity of his romance with a much younger woman.

Rusty Tomaski (TWIN PEAKS Character Series Bonus #8)

The TWIN PEAKS Character Series surveys one hundred ten characters from the series Twin Peaks (1990-91 on ABC and 2017 on Showtime as The Return), the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992), and The Missing Pieces (2014), a collection of deleted scenes from that film. The series will be rebooted in 2023 to reflect the third season (and patrons will have immediate access to each entry a month before it goes public), but this entry will remain intact. There will be spoilers.

Rusty likes beer and heavy metal and isn’t concerned with much else, even when danger looms before him.

FBI Agent Phillip Jeffries (TWIN PEAKS Character Series #73)

*A revised entry will be published separately in 2023 for an updated character series (which will be collected here). This is the original entry written before The Return.

The TWIN PEAKS Character Series surveys eighty-two characters from the series Twin Peaks (1990-91) and the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992) as well as The Missing Pieces (2014), a collection of deleted scenes from that film. A new character study will appear every weekday morning until the premiere of Showtime's new season of Twin Peaks on May 21, 2017. There will be spoilers for the original series and film.

Clad in a leisure suit, sporting a pompadour, the rambling Jeffries appears to be traveling through space (and maybe through time, though I have my doubts).

Sylvia Horne (TWIN PEAKS Character Series #74)

*A revised entry will be published separately in 2023 for an updated character series (which will be collected here). This is the original entry written before The Return.

The TWIN PEAKS Character Series surveys eighty-two characters from the series Twin Peaks (1990-91) and the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992) as well as The Missing Pieces (2014), a collection of deleted scenes from that film. A new character study will appear every weekday morning until the premiere of Showtime's new season of Twin Peaks on May 21, 2017. There will be spoilers for the original series and film.

Sylvia is never happy, and she's not afraid to let others know.

Daryl Lodwick (TWIN PEAKS Character Series Bonus #7)

The TWIN PEAKS Character Series surveys one hundred ten characters from the series Twin Peaks (1990-91 on ABC and 2017 on Showtime as The Return), the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992), and The Missing Pieces (2014), a collection of deleted scenes from that film. The series will be rebooted in 2023 to reflect the third season (and patrons will have immediate access to each entry a month before it goes public), but this entry will remain intact. There will be spoilers.

Lodwick feels at odds with his environment, never quite grasping what the people around him are interested in or want.

"Little Nicky" Needleman (TWIN PEAKS Character Series Bonus #6)

The TWIN PEAKS Character Series surveys one hundred ten characters from the series Twin Peaks (1990-91 on ABC and 2017 on Showtime as The Return), the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992), and The Missing Pieces (2014), a collection of deleted scenes from that film. The series will be rebooted in 2023 to reflect the third season (and patrons will have immediate access to each entry a month before it goes public), but this entry will remain intact. There will be spoilers.

An orphaned brat with a tragic backstory, Nicky isn’t much liked by the other characters onscreen – or the viewers.

Nancy O'Reilly (TWIN PEAKS Character Series Bonus #5)

The TWIN PEAKS Character Series surveys one hundred ten characters from the series Twin Peaks (1990-91 on ABC and 2017 on Showtime as The Return), the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992), and The Missing Pieces (2014), a collection of deleted scenes from that film. The series will be rebooted in 2023 to reflect the third season (and patrons will have immediate access to each entry a month before it goes public), but this entry will remain intact. There will be spoilers.

Nancy is so devious she’ll stab anyone in the back – even her own sister – although there may be more to her than pure malignancy.

Heidi (TWIN PEAKS Character Series #78)

*A revised entry will be published separately in 2023 for an updated character series (which will be collected here). This is the original entry written before The Return.

The TWIN PEAKS Character Series surveys eighty-two characters from the series Twin Peaks (1990-91) and the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992) as well as The Missing Pieces (2014), a collection of deleted scenes from that film. A new character study will appear every weekday morning until the premiere of Showtime's new season of Twin Peaks on May 21, 2017. There will be spoilers for the original series and film.

Heidi is often in awkward situations, and her standard response to this awkwardness is to giggle.
