Thanks for the shout out too! Yes at 27/28 there are far more urgent matters to attend too, but who can or will ever forget the plethora of comment threads you fueled and/or initiated. The Sunday Afternoon Matinee series will be sorely missed, and your involvement, always a bar raiser can never be replaced. I mourn it. But I can at least latch on to the continuation of REMEMBERING THE MOVIES, which is one of the net's most brilliantly evocative continuing features, and the possible realization of the Beatles and filmmaking ideas. The WIND AND THE WILLOWS was a labor of love, and you juggling with multiple blogs was a true inspiration when one wants a definition for "prolific."

2010 was the year I physically saw you too, and it quite a pleasure. The selfish part of me is hoping you expand to include WitD again, but realistically you need to follow the most sensible career path. Best Wishes for 2011 and beyond my friend!Sam Julianonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7610074516299275060.post-38702576125127747232010-12-31T11:46:13.172-05:002010-12-31T11:46:13.172-05:00Thanks, guys - happy new year! Thanks, guys - happy new year!Joel Bockohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11238338958380683893noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7610074516299275060.post-20315320331397985402010-12-28T01:36:54.946-05:002010-12-28T01:36:54.946-05:00Great post. They're there (either physically in the case of movies I own or virtually in the case of Netflix/torrents/etc) when I need/want them - I find forcing oneself to watch something usually defeats the purpose! I tried to make a very limited log of names of filmmakers that I really wanted to see more of, not just a passing curiosity, and ended up being like 40. Many hundreds of films. It's difficult.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7610074516299275060.post-18668664473643405802010-12-27T13:19:10.579-05:002010-12-27T13:19:10.579-05:00Great post indeed!

As you know I wrote a piece on just two such films (my choice for your blog round-up).Stephenhttp://checkingonmysausages.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7610074516299275060.post-39754289483899918622010-12-27T10:22:39.633-05:002010-12-27T10:22:39.633-05:00Thanks, Leaves - I hear what you're saying but...Thanks, Leaves - I hear what you're saying but one reason I'm not so much committed to write more is (besides the fact that my non-blogging schedule is suddenly and thankfully busier) that I want to put the formal knowledge/exploration into practice (even if just in the form of exercises I wouldn't show anyone, to re-prime the pump) as well as analysis. The irony is that when I started blogging I had trouble watching a film "as a film" i.e. without thinking about all the technique going into it.

Since then, partly due to the repetition of writing, and partly due to not dabbling in filmmaking at all during that time (as I had before starting), I've returned to the "magical object" mentality of my childhood, which has pros and cons. In the end, I always want to balance between that innocent appeal which first made me a movie buff, and the deeper knowledge which draws me in and importantly, encourages me to do more than just view.

And thanks again for the intro to Miraculous Virgin, along with many others. I discovered this whole endeavor late,...Great post. I discovered this whole endeavor late, and have only recently been following, but I sympathize with many of your undulating feelings and wholeheartedly approve with the following: 'It's much easier to write about the themes or the story or the feelings of a film than it is to grapple with it in specific terms, evoking its poetry while remaining conscious of its physical make-up, the way its magic is expressed through conscious decisions (or even happy accidents) in the editing, composition, camera movements, lighting, etc.'

There's never enough of that. So many people settle for mere categorization that it turns into a game of 'pin the tail on the donkey' as opposed to 'art appreciation and understanding', with the second meaning of 'appreciate' being the key. Something must be gained above and beyond mere pleasure, otherwise it's just Soma.

With this in mind, I believe you should write more this year than ever before. Sleep less. Youth is wasted on the young. You're so much wiser now than ever before, so you should use as much of this newfound wisdom as time will allow. Ignore the implication that this will all be worthless in the near future due to your inevitable future increases in wisdom - the hallmark of youth is reckless abandon. Let's see some!

Note: I give terrible advice.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
