Here is the complete collection, in all categories, of my "alternate Oscars" from 1923 to 2012. For an explanation of and introduction to these results, read my introduction to "90 Years of Cinema". Briefly, they were chosen during a weekly poll running from January 2012 and October 2013 on Wonders in the Dark. Allan Fish, a cinephile whose catalog of notable movies is ridiculously extensive (even more so when you realize he's seen almost all of these titles himself), provided the comprehensive nominations each week (though sometimes we ventured picks that weren't listed). The only exception was the short films category, which I myself researched and offered from 1960 on, racing each week to catch up with the deadline. But it was a great learning experience, as was this whole endeavor. For the voters' picks you can visit this round-up I compiled in honor of the poll's conclusion.
Below are my own personal picks for the following categories: feature, short, actor, actress, director, supporting actor, supporting actress, cinematography, score, screenplay, editing, and more erratically, use of music, scene, line, and ensemble cast. I also included some runners-up and eventually entire top fives for most years.
The arbitrary nature of these selections cannot be disclaimed enough. These were what my gut told me to go with, often late on a Saturday night or early Sunday morning during a 15-20 minute visit to Wonders. As a result, I wouldn't stand by some of these picks a week later, let alone after an entire year - and even those I would stand by remain almost entirely subjective. For further explanations, you can read my short introductions to each category, which were provided when I posted these separately in late October 2013.
Essentially, the value of these lists - aside from the trivial and hopefully taken-none-to-seriously fun of doing this sort of thing - lies in encouraging you to seek out or revisit these films, and/or to discuss those you've seen below. Please do both: while I certainly can't defend the notion that there's anything official about my judgements below - in the sense that these are "the best" (I find the whole notion of ranking absurd, if enjoyably absorbing), I can stand by the fact that each of these winners are worthy of your attention. Enjoy, and let this be the beginning of a most rewarding journey - or rather, many.

1953 • I Vitelloni (Nino Rota)

1956 • The Searchers (Max Steiner)
1957 • The Nights of Cabiria (Nino Rota)*
*Here
is one of three spots in these posts where I've retroactively tampered
with an original vote. At the time I voted for Malcolm Arnold's score
for "The Bridge on the River Kwai" based mostly on fondness for the
"Col. Bogie March." Allan pointed out it a comment that in fact the
"March" long predated the film. Since I mentioned in my original comment
that I had intended to vote for Rota, and only withheld because he was
winning so many from me already, I've restored him to his rightful place.
1958 • Vertigo (Bernard Herrmann)
1959 • Ben-Hur (Miklos Rozsa)
1961 • Breakfast at Tiffany's (Harry Mancini)
1962 • Jules and Jim (Georges Delerue)*
*Here
is the second spot where I've reverted my vote. I initially did vote
for Delerue, but changed it last minute to Pim Jacobs for the short film
"Zoo", which ingeniously cuts to music. I justified this by noting the
point of the category was how the music fit the film, not how it stood
on its own, but I've changed my mind since and even added a category
called "Use of Music" to cover that different area. Anyway, the idea of
NOT awarding one of my top 10 film scores of all time horrifies me, so
back it goes.
1963 • Contempt (Georges Delerue) - maybe my favorite score ever
1964 • Red Desert (Giovanni Fusco, Vittorio Gelmenti)
1965 • A Charlie Brown Christmas (Vince Guaraldi)
1966 • The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (Ennio Morricone)
1967 • Le Samourai (Francois de Roubaix)
1968 • Rosemary's Baby (Krzysztof Komeda)
1969 • Midnight Cowboy (John Barry, Harry Nilsson)
1971 • Shaft (Isaac Hayes)
1972 • The Godfather (Nino Rota)
1973 • Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (Bob Dylan)
1974 • The Parallax View (Michael Small)
1975 • Jaws (John Williams)
1976 • Taxi Driver (Bernard Herrmann)
1977 • Star Wars (John Williams)
1978 • Halloween (John Carpenter)
1979 • Stalker (Eduard Artemyev)
1981 • Chariots of Fire (Vangelis)*
*One of two times I voted for a film I've actually never seen - but I think I may have heard this score once or twice...
1982 • E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (John Williams)
1983 • Scarface (Giorgio Moroder)
1984 • The Terminator (James Horner)
1985 • A Zed and Two Noughts (Michael Nyman)
1986 • The Mission (Ennio Morricone)*
*see note for "Chariots of Fire"
1987 • The Last Emperor (Ryuichi Sakamoto, David Byrne, Cong Su)
1988 • Cinema Paradiso (Ennio Morricone)
1989 • The Little Mermaid (Alan Menken)
1991 • Beauty and the Beast (Alan Menken)
1992 • The Last of the Mohicans (Trevor Jones)
1993 • Schindler's List (John Williams)
1994 • The Lion King (Hans Zimmer)
1995 • Heat (Eliot Goldenthal)
1996 • Fargo (Carter Burwell)**
**Ok,
here is where my revisionism really gets out of hand. Frustrated with
'96 over all - a year that just doesn't excite me, except for a
remarkable run of short films - I noted in the score category that I
couldn't remember any film music from the year. I somewhat churlishly
tossed off "That Thing You Do!" simply for the catchy title song, and
mentioned "Ransom" and "Independence Day" as possible runners-up. But
Dean Treadway noted in a response comment that "Fargo" had one of the
greatest scores of all time. I caught this comment much later, long
after voting had closed, and finally visited YouTube for a refresher as I
should have done in the first place. Sure enough, this dimly-remembered
score is indeed great. Oops.

*I
didn't actually vote for this in the original poll; I voted for the
editor-less "Bambi" in the broader sense of "editing" (arrangement of
shots and speed of transitions) but that seems silly to me now and I'd
rather honor something closer to the technical meaning of the term. I
probably would have voted for the Sturges, and anyway that's how I'd
vote today. I wouldn't have picked "Magnificent Ambersons", that's for
sure.

Statistics
Among
directors, Martin Scorsese topped in all categories: he scored the most
Director wins (4), directed the most winning performances (8, tied with
Ingmar Bergman), and received 15 wins with 5 films overall in the film,
director, and acting categories. David Lynch followed closely behind,
directing 7 actors to awards, placing 13 wins and 7 films in the top
categories, and tying with 7 others by winning Best Director 3 times
(Robert Bresson, Carl Theodor Dreyer, Sergei Eisenstein, Alfred
Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Fritz Lang, and Terrence Malick also shared
that distinction). There were 6 directors who won the Directing category
2 times: Krzystzof Kieslowski, F.W. Murnau, Yasujrio Ozu, Steven
Spielberg, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, and Orson Welles.
Elia
Kazan and Stanley Kubrick followed the 3 leaders by directing 6
award-winning performances each, while Darren Aronofsky, Alfred
Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino, Lars Von Trier, and
James Whale all came in with 5 acting category wins each for their
films. The Coen brothers, Howard Hawks, Spike Lee, and Roman Polanski
rounded out this category by guiding 4 performances each to victory.
Behind
Scorsese and Lynch for overall wins in top categories were Ingmar
Bergman and Stanley Kubrick (10 wins, 8 films for each of them), Alfred
Hitchcock (9 wins, 7 films), Steven Spielberg and Carl Theodor Dreyer (8
wins, with 6 and 3 films, respectively), and finally 7 top wins for
Lars Von Trier (with 4 films), the Coen brothers (with 3), and Elia
Kazan (with just 2 heavy hitters).
Only
5 actors pulled off 3 wins each: Harriett Andersson, Dustin Hoffman,
Walter Huston, James Stewart, and Meryl Streep. Only Andersson worked
with the same director more than once (in fact, all 3 times) to pull
this off. Also worthy of note, 6 performers directed themselves to
acting wins: Marina de Van for In My Skin, Buster Keaton for The General, Barbara Loden for Wanda, Laurence Olivier for Henry V, Erich von Stroheim for The Wedding March, and Orson Welles for Chimes at Midnight.
Surprisingly,
in the crafts category few were able to eke out more than two wins.
John Williams was the winning composer 5 times, followed by Bernard
Herrmann and Nino Rota with 4 wins each, and Ennio Morricone with 3. The
cinematographic competition was even tighter, as only Gordon Willis
scored 3 victories. Among screenwriters, Billy Wilder and Charlie
Kaufman scored 3 times, the only writers to do so. No editors followed
suit.
According
to my own highly debatable and mutually exclusive definitions, 10
documentaries won in the Feature category, along with 4 animated films,
and 3 avant-garde experiments. Of the remaning live-action narrative
films, 8 were categorized as thrillers and another 6 as gangster movies,
while adventure, horror and comedies nabbed 5 top spots each. Noir
scored 4 and sci-fi won 3 times, while musicals only squeaked in with 2
and only 1 western got my pick (guess which one?). The remaining 34
films fell under the catch-all drama category.
When
it came to short films, however, the dynamic was switched: live-action
non-musical narratives barely factored into the victory parade. There
were only 7: a total of 3 dramas, and 1 each from a few disparate
genres: comedy, horror, thriller, and sci-fi. Meanwhile, there were 6
live-action musicals or music videos. There were a strong 20 live-action
avant-garde films, 14 live-action documentaries, and a whopping 39
animated films. So, on that note...

This is a fantastic list--so many different movies and performances to pore over, think about, and search out.
One thing I *have* to know: Who is that woman in bottom left corner picture of the composite banner at the top of the page?? I looked through the whole list, but couldn't figure out what movie it's from.
Hey Stephen - glad you enjoyed poring over the list! You are also the first person to comment on a page of my blog (as opposed to a post). Congratulations - and your reward is...to find out the identity of that woman!
Do you mean right corner of the 90 Years of Cinema image? If so, it's Anna Karina (who looks a bit different than usual because she's dressed in unusual fashion, at least for those used to her appearance in Godard films). I gave her Best Actress for Made in USA which is far from her best performance but it was a token to make up for missing her in earlier, worthier performances. Which I guess goes to show I can be just as political as the Oscars haha. Wish I could remember where I found that image but it certainly struck me because it's so different from her usual look.
If you're talking about the actual "Lost in the Movies" banner at the top of the page, that's a woman from the leper colony in the Iranian film The House is Black (1963). Although not all the films in my banner received "alternate Oscars," The House is Black did win Best Short and Best Director (it was Farrokhzad's only film) for that year. It also made my top 10 on my all-time favorites list. The screen-cap was originally featured in my "In the Beginning..." image post of 2009, in which I highlighted some of the great cold opens in cinema history.
Hey, thanks for responding so promptly!
Your first answer was the one I meant--and I realize now that I said "left corner" when I meant "right," so no wonder it was confusing! I had thought for a moment it might be Anna Karina, but as you say she looked different, and I've only seen her in Bande a Part and A Woman Is a Woman. I need to watch more Godard, Vivre sa Vie and Pierrot Le Fou being top of the list.
Ten years back I began my alternate awards (and nominations), so I enjoyed reading your selections and was pleased when our choices occasionally overlapped. I particularly liked your choices of MAGIC's Anthony Hopkins and E.T.'s Robert MacNaughton (who got one-tenth the accolades Drew Barrymore did). I still chose SUPERMAN's Chris Reeve and BLADE RUNNER's Rutger Hauer for those year's slots, but I commend you on your original thinking as well as your thoroughness.
Glad you enjoyed it. Agreed about McNaughton - he's really good in that film but always gets overlooked.
Practically no love for Drive (2011)
I did enjoy Drive - it probably would have been in the top five that year if I had done one but I didn't feel I'd seem enough movies to justify one.
*seen
year's slots?
new films?
Honestly, I hardly see new releases anymore (even before the pandemic). At some point I should probably do a series covering acclaimed and/or popular films from the past decade that I haven't seen yet (as I did around 2010 for the 2000s). But it probably wouldn't be for a while because right now I am focusing on three big Twin Peaks projects that have been in my backlog forever and need to finally get completed.
