Lost in the Movies: THE ARCHIVE Chapter 43: Stalled Along the Way (April - July 2023)

THE ARCHIVE Chapter 43: Stalled Along the Way (April - July 2023)

During a period intended to kickstart the final phases of three climactic Twin Peaks projects, my output really began to ebb. Not only did I fail to re-launch my video, character, and podcast series (promised, in some cases, for six years), I actually fell behind on other work before eventually catching up. This three-month disappointment crystallized a sense of perpetual frustration for the past half-decade of grand plans and endless distractions.

Nonetheless - as with other largely dormant eras - each piece I did share presented itself as an oasis in the parched landscape, from Twin Peaks comparisons to the hyper-hip Lost Highway and the mellowed-with-age The Straight Story to three Twin Peaks conversations about my own approach to the series, re-assessing Parts 17 & 18 of The Return, and re-visiting - you guessed it - Lost Highway (talk about a Möbius strip).

The highlight of this period is one of my longest public podcasts, Southland Tales w/ guest Andrew Cook (LOST IN THE MOVIES podcast #54) + appearance by Vera Drew & capsules on Donnie Darko/The Box, an hour-plus discussion of a fascinating cultural artifact, amplified by a few other commentaries.

APRIL
The new and final season links up directly to the previous one, restlessly racing down a surreal neo-noir highway to explore the Lynchverse through one of his most crucial collaborations with editor Mary Sweeney

Spring update for the big Twin Peaks projects & more (status update)
The character series is on a break, Lost in Twin Peaks may return soon (spoiler alert: it won't), and Journey Through Twin Peaks remains on the backburner

April 2023 Patreon round-up including 3 TWIN PEAKS Character Series advances
This month's patron preview rewards are few but rewarding nonetheless

MAY

Under the Skin (LOST IN THE MOVIES podcast #53)
With rare speed, I open up a recent Patreon film in focus, about a confused extraterrestrial hunting her prey across a Scottish landscape (though my comparison with the book remains behind paywall)

The Straight Story as Twin Peaks Cinema #25 - Long Road Home (podcast)
Mary Sweeney emerged as a writer as well as editor/producer for a much slower road movie than her prior David Lynch collaboration

500 Questions for Me • discussion w/ the "Twin Peaks Grammar" Artists Love Twin Peaks podcast
Previous Twin Peaks Conversations guest Anthony returns the favor by quizzing me on my working method as well as my opinions on Peaks

Status update heading into summer
As I shift towards a different reward structure, I have just one character advance to share

Southland Tales w/ guest Andrew Cook (LOST IN THE MOVIES podcast #54) + appearance by Vera Drew & capsules on Donnie Darko/The Box
The biggest episode of this series offers a reflection - or several - on one of the wildest films of the 2000s, which both reflects the Bush presidency in a funhouse mirror and anticipates the Trump/Covid era craziness that was still a decade away

Status update: To Sleep With Anger on Wonders in the Dark + catching up w/ conversations & more
With some long-delayed podcasts on the horizon, I re-publish an essay from a few years ago

TWIN PEAKS CONVERSATIONS #21 w/ Twin Peaks Peeks hosts Ashley Brandt and Mat Olson (YouTube & extended PATREON) premieres tonight
Finally renewing this podcast, I speak to fellow podcasters whose disappointment in the third season finale has transformed into more nuanced appreciation

Mary Sweeney's Baraboo as Twin Peaks Cinema #26 - Long Road Home (podcast)
Lynch's longtime collaborator steps out onto her own, ending our road trip with a pit stop in a small town bearing compelling resemblance to the Peaks yet to come when it was made

TWIN PEAKS CONVERSATIONS #22 w/ Lost Highway: The Fist of Love author Scott Ryan (YouTube & extended PATREON)
The last official episode (bonus discussions forthcoming) invites a previous guest back to discuss his new book on a Lynch film he only discovered late in his appreciation of the director

Announcement: Lost in Twin Peaks Season 3 Finale delayed again
In a rare takedown, I delete a post that hit a roadblock while promising to share it again soon

Another month with minimal rewards, although this one does crack the top thirty characters and extend my Twin Peaks discussions beyond the public parts

As I approach an important anniversary, I optimistically lay out the prospects for a busy week and a busy three months after that

(in which I conclude film-focused public writing and podcasting fifteen years after my online work began)
